I started this song about 3 months ago so it was a fairly long process, and probably the most challenging LFB song to record and mix to date.

Here's a deadly video of one of my favourite Irish bands, Hands Up Who Wants To Die. This is from the gig they played in Thomas House recently, they only got 3 songs in and the power in the venue went. It was awesome though. You can see me doing some serious nodding up the front too. Ha!

"You're Safe Now" was based on a synth line I had from a few months ago. I kept coming back to this but couldn't really figure out how to finish it until now. It was pretty difficult to mix as there are so many synths, but I eventually settled on what's here.

"5:00" was recorded and mixed in an hour or so. It's a small song.

Hooray For Humans - Salt N' Vinegar demo

This is the version of Salt N' Vinegar that appeared on the first H4H demo. It was recorded in Sept '06. On the recording is me, Aine and Darragh.

I personally prefer this version of the song over the one that appeared on our album. Though I still really like the album version, it's a totally different song. By the time we'd come to recording Safekeeping, we'd changed certain sections of the song to make it more fitting as a closer to an album. But in doing that I think we lost some of the dynamics of the original.

We hadn't a clue what we were doing when we recorded the demo. We'd only had our first practice 2 weeks beforehand, and had only practiced Salt N' Vinegar itself at one practice session. For the demo we recorded and mixed 3 songs in two days. This does show in some respects - you can hear a few mistakes on the guitar, maybe a bit of speeding up in some sections. But the point is, these mistakes are among the main reasons I prefer this version.

Hooray For Humans - Anxious

So I thought I'd put up the Hooray For Humans cover of "Anxious" by Crayonsmith for download.

This was recorded for the Out On A Limb 5th Birthday CD called "Five Years Of Missed Deadlines"... It was my very first attempt at recording anything that would be heard by anyone other than me. Listening to it now I guess it does sound a bit flat in places, but I hadn't a clue what I was doing.

All of the synth sounds are made on the Juno 60. The beats were made using a Roland DR880 drum machine and I added a bit of bass on the part with the arpeggiator. The washy noise at the start was just my guitar with loads of delay and then looped backwards.

Jen recorded her vocals in like an hour with super-human ability. Just as well really.

New York!

Hello!

Well we're home from New York. It was the best fun ever.

I don't even know where to start in describing how much I love New York. It's completely insane but deadly. Most other big cities I've been to I've hated, but almost everybody in NY is just really sound. We stayed in a hostel on 101st street which was pretty far from most things but it was okay. We drank lots of whiskey.

The gig itself was good, had a few technical problems but by the end it was cool. Heathers and Giveamanakick totally ruled.

It was just a really nice buzz for the whole thing. We saw some amazing gigs there too - Trash Talk, The Mae Shi, An Albatross, Deerhoof, Monotonix... All great...

Also we just confirmed that we're playing in Canada next year too, which is crazy. Can't wait!
